A Nitty Gritty Contest...

I had a promised a little contest over here if this page reached 25 followers. It is currently at 26 so I figure I owe you guys. I am giving away some serious cards on my other page. I am gonna start slow here with one card. The last 4 cards I have posted here have been of Hall of Famers, I am one person who believes that this player belongs in the Hall of Fame, too. He holds the NL record for playing in 1207 consecutive games, he was a 10-time All Star who started the game 9 times, once as a write-in. He owns a .338 career postseason batting average with 8 doubles, 3 triples and 11 homers in October. He also had 31 RBIS and a couple of steals. He was part of 5 NL Pennant winning teams over his career and was a World Champion with the Dodgers in 1981. He won 4 Gold Gloves, topped the 200 hit plateau 6-times and paced the NL in hits twice. He won the NL MVP Award in 1974, was the All Star MVP and the NLCS MVP in 1978 and won a second NLCS MVP in 1984. He took the Roberto Clemente Award in 1981 and the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1984. He was one of the most consistent hitters and fielders in the National League throughout his 19 year career. His 2,599 hits ranks him 75th of all time. He topped the 300 mark 16 times over his career and owns a lifetime .294 average. He appeared on the HOF ballot for the maximum of 15 times, achieving his highest support of 42%, his first year on the ballot in 1993. He is currently in Hall of Fame limbo. I should have mentioned that I was speaking of first baseman Steve Garvey, but I figured that you guys are smart and could figure that out. The card of him that will serve as prize is a 2002 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic game used bat card. This is from the days when the back of the card actually said “On the front of the card is an authentic piece of a bat used by Steve Garvey in an official Major League Baseball game.” I will try and throw in a few extras with this for whomever the randomizer chooses. Thanks to everyone for reading. To enter, just comment with your name. Be sure that you are following this blog and that it is on your blogrolls. To enter you must comment on this post. There will be 2 days to enter. I put up a poll to go along with it, when the poll closes, so does the contest. The poll question is "Does Steve Garvey belong in Cooperstown?". Thanks! If you keep reading, I will keep on posting. A different vintage card EVERY day. Good luck! Later.

  1. Murph deserves to get in before Garvey.

  3. The stats between Murphy and Garvey are quite similar with Murphy having a slight edge (Garvey leads in hits, doubles, average, Murphy leads in just about everything else, but by slim margins in most).

Personally, I don't know if either of them belong in the Hall.

  4. I have to agree with Night Owl on this one, I'm not sure if either one belongs. I don't think it would be a travesty if neither one gets in, that is for sure.

  5. I don't know if I'm slightly dyslexic, but I often read his name as Steve Gravy.

  6. Off to work, interested to see if anyone enters the contest... Just your name will do it...
Incidentally, the reason behind the question is simply because I am giving one of Garvey's cards, not that I am pushing him for the Hall. He isn't currently eligible. He had his 15 years, but didn't make it, now he will remain uneligible for a long while. I was surprised for one that he didn't make it when eligible. I am curious what everyone else thinks. A 1st baseman without power numbers has a hard road, but he was an amazing hitter... Again, to enter, just comment with your name if ya want in. Thanks! Happy arguing! Oh, I have often read his name as Gravy, too!

  9. BA Benny entered. I always liked Garvey as a player. I thought he was a solid defensive player with a good stick. Hall of fame?????? Not too sure about that.

  11. Play at the Plate wants in too! And I think Garvey is one of those guys who is a bubble guy. He was really good...but it's not the Hall of Really Good. I don't know if he was good enough for the Hall. It's food for thought and a good one for conversation.

    I'd vote for Cyndy Garvey.

  14. Justin G.

I say he belongs in the Hall of Very Good Players. Maybe a shop in Cooperstown should create the Hall of Very Good...I'd go see it.

  18. Field of Cards entering!

Garvey does not belong in the HOF. I do however that during most of his playing days everyone assumed he was in the middle of a Hall of Fame career. They thought that about Alan Trammell too (although Trammell deserves it more than Garvey).

  19. Like Garvey, but he's not a HOFer.

    Carl Crawford Cards

  20. A few more years of lowering the bar with these Hall of Fame honorees (See Jim Rice, Andrew Dawson, Bruce Sutter) and Steve might have a shot. Until then, I would have to say no

Lets see how many Red Sox, Cubs and Expos fans I just pissed off

  21. Teddy, Hopefully ALOT! I believe that Garvey will make it in someday, probably after he dies through the Veterans Committee. The bar has been lowered drastically, yet there are still some great players on the outside looking at Richie Ashburn, Dizzy Dean (a few great seasons doesn't make a HOFer) and... well I will stop there. Glad we got this dialogue going. FOC brought up a great point about Garvey looking to be a lock midway through his career. I mean the dude STARTED 9 All Star Games while playing at the same time as Perez, Stargell, McCovey, etc. Anyway, I loved the comments. Thanks to all! I will post the winner tomorrow. Contest is closed. Thanks to all who entered and determined whether or not Garvey goes into the blogger Hall of Fame.
    THANKS!
